Setting Up A Basic Exercise Program

There are two basic things you will want to be aware of when you’re setting up an exercise program . . .

1. You needs at least twenty to forty minutes of aerobic exercise three to four times per week.

2. You will want to include weight training at least twice per week, but preferably 3 times a week.

If you are absolutely, positively going to choose amongst aerobic exercise or weight exercise – choose aerobic exercise. You are working out your heart muscle and beside the obvious advantage to that, aerobic workout can help you maintain your weight.

You need to keep in mind that muscle burns fat, so if you can toss in approximately fifty push-ups prior to your aerobic workout, you will reap the benefits….

Why strength exercise before aerobic exercise?

Actually, for the first 20 minutes of an aerobic workout, your body is burning approximately 80% carbohydrates and 20% fat. If your goal is to be able decrease your body weight, you want to burn more fat and less carbs, right?

Well, the next 20 minutes will get you into about a 50/50 mode. You’re burning a bit more fat than you were and that’s a greatthing.

If you exercise beyond 40 minutes, you will be burning approximately 80% fat. Realistically though, the majority of people are not going to exercise for that long period of time. Twenty to thirty minutes of aerobic exercise is average.

If you begin with pushups, you actually start the aerobic activity…not much, but it’s a start. So, when you start your aerobic exercise, you may start burning that fat a much quicker.

Okay – Now to start! First, find an aerobic exercise you like. More than one type of exercise is best as you will be able to keep your workouts interesting and it will avoid your routine from getting boring.

Now, plan your schedule by selecting the days and times you can do the exercise. exercise at minimum 3 days per week and do not take more than two days off in a row. The most popular workout schedule is Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Most fitness experts mainly recommend trying to exercise at the same time on those days; not a necessity but it can help get you into a routine and you’re more likely to continue.

If you’re not going to do strength training, as mentioned previously, at minimum do a few reps of push-ups.

Make sure to start your routine with a brief warmup, and gradually increase the tempo. If you’re following an exercise tape, It is fairly simple to know what intensity you should be following. If you will be running, try including periods of sprinting along the way, followed by slower running. This will definitely get you in shape.

Do the aerobic tape routine on some days and on the days you feel like going on a run, go run.

If you decide to weight train as well, do this 2-3 times a week! A great routine should include:

Cons – some exercises look a little intimidating. Some exercises having you on the chair and bending over. While the chair is very stable, it can make you feel like you might fall over when you do some of the exercises.

Pilates Performer – the original pilates machine that has been around for a while. It’s a lay down machine that focuses on doing exercises slowly. The exercises are slow and controlled so you don’t get a cardio workout like with the Malibu Pilates chair.

Pros – There are lots of videos you can buy to help you get the most out of the machine. This is a great machine to use if you need to strengthen your back and stretch out your lower back muscles. It is easy to use and builds strength quickly while toning your body. It can slide under your bed if you have room there.

Cons – you don’t get a cardiovascular work out.

Depending on your style and personality one of these machines will make a perfect addition to your normal routine. Both offer strength training and flexibility exercises and both are easily put away out of sight when you’re finished using them.
